As he untangled the chain, a beam of sunlight peeked through the early morning clouds. Multicolored reflections flashed across his chest, arms, and face.

Someone kicked at his door.

“You coming?” Raymond said.

Toby pulled on his boots and trotted behind.

“What’s the rush?”

“They’re waiting—on you.”

Great. “Why didn’t Sarah or Samantha call me?”

“Because they’re still at the Keeper’s school.”

“What did I miss?”

“The rest of us are meeting with Mayo.”

Raymond then took a different turn.

“Where are we going?”

“To meet with-”

“No. Where are we going?”

“To his room.”

“Why?”

“Because that’s where he is.”

Toby clenched his teeth and didn’t say the first ten things in his head. “Raymond, why are we meeting with that man?”

“Because Vaiden said so.”

Of course. Why waste time with petty facts, reasons, or a plan.

“I thought we were leaving this morning,” Toby said.

“And Vaiden gave us an order.” Raymond stopped walking. “Is some part of this confusing for you?”

“Why are you yelling at me?”

“I’m...” He took a deep breath. “Sorry. Between Samantha’s mood swings, cravings, swollen ankles, and all the stupid politics...”

“I got this.”

“What?”

“Go take care of your wife.”
